KUALA LUMPUR: Only 35 out of 104 Malaysian missions abroad appointed assistant registrar of voters have been actively registering electors.

Election Commission (EC) secretary Datuk Kamaruddin Mohamed Baria said they were Malaysian missions in Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Bosnia Herzegovina, Brazil, Brunei, Cambodia, Canada, China, Czech Republic, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, India, Ireland, Italy and Kuwait.
The others were in Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, New Zealand, North Korea, Poland, Romania, Singapore, South Korea, Sweden, Switzerland, Syria, Taiwan, the United Kingdom, the United States and Venezuela.
The EC has agreed to simplify the process of returning the voter registration form (Form A) after taking into account feedbacks from Malaysians abroad, he said in statement today.
He said an applicants who wanted to register as a normal voter or an absentee voter must fill in Form A besides additional particulars, attach a copy of identity card or international passport, and a copy of student card or a letter of confirmation of student status for full-time students.
The completed documents can be sent personally or through another applicant to assistant registrar of voters at foreign missions, he added.
Kamaruddin hoped more Malaysians abroad would register as voters as the process of returning Form A had been simplified.
The EC said so far only 200,000 Malaysians abroad were had registered as voters for the next general election. -- BERNAMA
